why do ed sheeran’s songs always freak me out a bit
it’s like misogyny disguised as ~~romance~~
like in “cross me,” he says, “that’s my seed, yeah, that’s all me” and honestly what kind of next level caveman bullshit. reducing a woman to a receptacle for your seed, ew, to a container for your offspring, and also to your exclusive territory that you have marked with your semen. so fucking dehumanizing.
liek whoa the straight agenda is strong with this one
27mice replied to your text post: That’s not ed sheerran singing that part. It’s someone else and they are referring to their daughter. it is kinda confusing because the other two singers are talking about romantic partners and the talking
aaaaah, that’s good to know! thank you so much for telling me! i’m still creeped out by the lyrics though, and were i ed sheeran, i probably wouldn’t wanna have that in my song and put my name to it, particularly since, if talking about a daughter–a real, three-dimensional child, particularly a girl–then any male singer referring to her simply as “my seed” is pretty dehumanizing/objectifying, a statement of the man’s possession/control of the girl-child rather than an acknowledgment of loving fatherhood. it also does sort of take the agency of the mother out of the picture, reducing her to a vessel for the singer’s semen and the singer’s children.
then again, i’m currently doing a thesis that is at least partly about feminism, so perhaps i’m approaching the song with a degree of paranoia. :/
